We’re happy to share some of the insights and tips we’ve gathered after living and travelling extensively throughout the Northern Territory and the Kimberley. This vast and remote part of Australia is unlike anywhere else—home to rugged landscapes, spectacular gorges, winding rivers, ancient rock formations, and unforgettable sunsets.
Travelling here requires a little preparation, patience, and a spirit of adventure. Distances are long, roads can vary from sealed highways to rough, corrugated tracks, and services such as fuel, food, and medical facilities are limited in many areas. That said, the rewards are immense: incredible scenery, unique wildlife, swimming holes in pristine gorges, and a sense of remoteness that is becoming harder to find anywhere else in the world.
Whether you’re planning a short visit or a multi-week journey, our experience has taught us a few key things:
Plan your route carefully: Know where fuel, water, and campsites are located. Even short stretches of road can become challenging in the wet season.
Respect the environment: These areas are fragile and culturally significant. Many sites are part of Aboriginal land, so always follow local guidelines, stay on marked tracks, and leave no trace.
Be flexible: Road closures, weather, or unexpected events can change your plans. The more adaptable you are, the more enjoyable your adventure will be.
Take your time: The beauty of the Kimberley is in the journey, not just the destinations. Slow down, stop for a swim in a gorge, enjoy the solitude, and soak in the unique landscapes.
In the pages that follow, we’ve put together practical advice, suggested routes, and insider tips to help first-time visitors—and even experienced travellers—make the most of their Northern Territory and Kimberley adventures. Our aim is to share the knowledge that makes a journey safer, more comfortable, and truly unforgettable.
